The Great Migration Explained: Your Complete Safari Guide

The Great Migration Explained: When and Where to See It

Every year, one of the greatest wildlife spectacles on Earth unfolds across the vast plains of East Africa. More than 1.5 million wildebeest, accompanied by hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles, embark on a remarkable journey in search of fresh grazing and water. Known as The Great Migration, this incredible natural event is often called the “Greatest Show on Earth” and is a bucket-list experience for wildlife enthusiasts from around the globe.

If you’re planning an African safari, understanding when and where to see the Great Migration can help you choose the best destination and time for your trip.

What Is the Great Migration?

The Great Migration is a continuous, year-round movement of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles between Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park and Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve. Unlike many people think, it isn’t a single event—it is a natural cycle driven by seasonal rainfall and the search for fresh grass and water.

As the rains move, the herds follow, creating one of the most dramatic wildlife journeys on the planet. Along the way, they face countless challenges, including powerful river currents, steep riverbanks, and predators such as lions, crocodiles, cheetahs, and hyenas.

Why Does the Great Migration Happen?

The migration is all about survival.

The vast herds move in search of:

  • Fresh grazing lands
  • Reliable water sources
  • Safe areas for calving

This constant movement keeps the ecosystem healthy while supporting one of the highest concentrations of predators anywhere in Africa.

The Great Migration Calendar

The migration follows a natural cycle each year, although weather patterns can cause slight variations.

January to March – Calving Season (Southern Serengeti, Tanzania)

The journey begins in the southern Serengeti and the Ndutu region, where the wildebeest gather to give birth.

During this period:

  • Around 500,000 calves are born within a few weeks.
  • The open plains provide excellent visibility, helping mothers protect their young.
  • Predators such as lions, cheetahs, and hyenas are highly active, making this one of the most exciting times for wildlife viewing.

Best for:

  • Baby animals
  • Big cat sightings
  • Wildlife photography

April to June – Journey North (Central & Western Serengeti)

As the rains end, the herds begin moving northwest through the Serengeti.

Visitors can expect:

  • Massive columns of wildebeest stretching across the plains.
  • Frequent predator encounters.
  • Excellent game viewing with fewer tourists than the peak season.

This is one of the best times to enjoy a quieter safari while still witnessing the migration.

July to October – River Crossing Season (Northern Serengeti & Maasai Mara)

This is the most famous stage of the Great Migration.

As the herds reach the Mara River, they face one of their greatest obstacles. Thousands of wildebeest plunge into crocodile-filled waters, battling strong currents and steep riverbanks in dramatic crossings that have become iconic safari moments.

Depending on rainfall, the herds move between the Northern Serengeti and the Maasai Mara, creating unforgettable wildlife encounters on both sides of the border.

Best places to witness river crossings:

  • Northern Serengeti (Tanzania)
  • Maasai Mara National Reserve (Kenya)

This is also the busiest safari season, so booking well in advance is essential.

November to December – Return to the Serengeti

As the short rains begin, the herds gradually leave Kenya and travel back into Tanzania.

Although river crossings become less frequent, visitors can still enjoy:

  • Excellent wildlife viewing
  • Fewer crowds
  • Beautiful green landscapes
  • Active predators following the migration south

Kenya or Tanzania: Which Is Better for the Great Migration?

Both countries offer incredible opportunities, but the experience depends on when you travel.

Choose Tanzania if you want:

  • Calving season (January–March)
  • The migration’s early and middle stages
  • Longer viewing opportunities throughout the year
  • Vast, uncrowded landscapes

Choose Kenya if you want:

  • The famous Mara River crossings (typically July–October)
  • High concentrations of wildlife
  • Classic safari experiences in the Maasai Mara
  • Luxury tented camps overlooking the migration routes

Many travellers combine both countries for the ultimate migration safari.

Animals You’ll See During the Migration

While the wildebeest are the stars of the show, they’re far from the only wildlife you’ll encounter.

Expect to see:

  • Wildebeest
  • Zebras
  • Thomson’s gazelles
  • Lions
  • Leopards
  • Cheetahs
  • Spotted hyenas
  • Nile crocodiles
  • Elephants
  • Giraffes
  • Buffaloes
  • Hippos
  • Fills

The migration supports an entire ecosystem, making every game drive an exciting and unpredictable experience.

Tips for Planning a Great Migration Safari

To make the most of your adventure:

  • Book early, especially if traveling between July and October.
  • Stay for at least 4–6 days to increase your chances of witnessing key migration events.
  • Be flexible wildlife follows nature, not a schedule, so sightings can never be guaranteed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Great Migration guaranteed?

No. The migration follows rainfall patterns, so exact locations vary from year to year. Experienced guides monitor herd movements to maximize your chances of seeing them.

When is the best time to see the Great Migration?

It depends on what you want to experience:

  • January–March: Calving season in Tanzania.
  • July–October: Mara River crossings in Kenya and Northern Tanzania.

How long should I stay?

A 5–7-day safari offers the best opportunity to experience the migration while exploring other incredible wildlife areas.

Kenya, the trip that ruined every other holiday for me Three parks, one unforgettable journey. At Amboseli, herds of elephants strolled across the dust with Mount Kilimanjaro rising behind them, a scene so perfect I kept thinking someone had painted it. At Lake Nakuru, the shoreline blushed pink with flamingos, and we spotted rhinos grazing nearby. Then came the Masai Mara, where the plains seemed to go on forever and every drive felt like a nature documentary, with lions on the hunt, cheetahs on the prowl. But what made this trip truly special was our guide- Mr Jackson, a truly living legend. He had a sharp eye for spotting animals, endless stories about the wildlife and the land, and a way of finding the perfect spot at the perfect moment. His patience, humour and passion turned good sightings into moments I'll be retelling for years. We never felt rushed, and we always felt very looked after. Although the journey just flew by, and I came home with thousands of photos, dusty boots and a heart full of gratitude. Amazing doesn't cover it. If Kenya is on your list, don't wait. Go, and go with this team. I am already planning to rebook again soon. From the group, thank you Daydream and the team for the memorable trip. See you again soon.

Everything was arranged smoothly, and we always knew what was happening and what to expect. Our guide James was fantastic. He was very enthusiastic and genuinely interested in finding animals, always carefully looking around and trying to spot something special. You could really feel that he enjoyed the safari himself, and his excitement made the experience even more enjoyable for us. Thanks to his experience and attention, we saw a great variety of animals and had many memorable moments. We really enjoyed the whole experience and highly recommend Daydream Safars.

Not just a safari, a real life experience Ode a te James! Our Masai guide James made our safari an unforgettable lifetime trip. Thanks to James's true passion for wildlife and to his patience (yes, patience is key) we managed to see not only the big fives but also some other rare animals - like a kudu. He is an eagle-eyed guide able to spot animals miles away even on a bushy tree. Worth to share is also the fact that James is a very careful driver on roads that can become challenging at times. To Daydreams Safari: Thank you Kennedy for planning and organising out unforgettable trip. The Safari was executed in such a smooth way which reflects the experience of the company. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!

Great safari experience We booked with Daydream as they were reasonably priced and easy to deal with. We were impressed that Kennedy who had helped us book everything came to meet us at our hotel in Nairobi and set us off with our driver Solomon. Solomon took real care of us and our kids and showed us a great array of animals in Lake Nakuru and Masai Mara. He got us really close to the action making sure the experience was unforgettable. There is well marked tourist trail so beware of the expensive souvenir stop offs. In our experience it was much better value buying from the Maasai women at the park gates. We took a balloon ride while we were there and really enjoyed that as well. The accommodation and food was excellent, all in all it was wonderfully curated trip!
